To increase our numbers I have combined this group with 2 similar ones, Danish Language & Swedish Expats. All 3 Meetups usually take place at 7.30pm on the 3rd Tues of the month at the same venue. See "Events" on left for further details.
I am from London, England and speak native English, reasonably passable Danish and a little bit of Swedish - I can also read but not speak Norwegian - I studied French and Latin at school but have forgotten most of it.
"I was born in Northern England but currently live in Essex. I am single but live with another member of the Scandinavian Languages Meetup group. Shelley Harrington.

I am happier now than I have ever been in my whole life.
I own and run my own business. I supply disc jockeys, karaoke presenters, quizmasters and childrens entertainers for both private and corporate events in London and within the M25 catchment area. I also hire out both disco and karaoke equipment.
I became interested in Scandinavia many years ago. I started learning the Danish language after spending a few weeks there at the home of a friends elderly grandmother, who spoke no English whatsoever.
On my return, I did evening classes for a year at the end of which I took and managed to pass some basic Institute of Linguists exams in Danish.
I even toyed with the idea of living there for a while. However, life somehow got in the way and eventually I gave up that notion.
Around 4½ years ago both in the course of my work and socially, I bumped into 3 or 4 Danes in the space of as many months. I was shocked to find how very little I remembered of the language.
I had some time on my hands, having just split up from my then fiance. So I re-started my Danish lessons. This time I chose the University of Westminster. The Head of Languages there now is amazingly the very same woman who taught me my first words of Danish probably 25 years ago. We still remembered each other.
At Westminster. you can study Danish. Swedish or Norwegian at any one of 6 levels and I re-started in grade 4. It was a real struggle at first but I persevered.
Three years later I have managed to pass the grade 4, grade 5 and finally grade 6 exams.
My written Danish is now just about passable but because I lack practice, oral Danish is always going to be challenging for me. But I get by, more or less.
I very much enjoy organising the 3 Scandinavian Meetup groups, making new friends and helping beginners, who have just started to explore the languages.
